New Baptist Covenant Director of Programs and Communication
Having fled with his family at the age of two from the Liberian Civil War with the help of a pastor, the Reverend Elijah R. Zehyoue has devoted much of his life working to close the racial divide in our country and especially in our churches. The Rev. Zehyoue earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and followed it with a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago. His master’s thesis is entitled The Ropes of War: A Theology of Truth and Reconciliation.
The Rev. Zehyoue is an ordained Baptist minister. He previously served at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he regularly preached, taught Sunday School and led the church’s mission and social justice initiatives. Prior to serving at Calvary, the Rev. Zehyoue served as associate pastor for youth at University Church Chicago.
He is also the convener and founder of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty DC/Maryland/Virginia advocacy group. While a student at the University of Chicago Divinity School, he founded the Faith and Community Leadership Network, and the Divinity School Minority Students’ Association.
